The 5 hooks that actually stop the scroll

By Devin Ross  ·  Aug 21, 2026  ·  4 min read

You can write the best post in the world and lose it in the first line. The hook is the whole game on a fast-moving feed, so it deserves more of your editing time than anything else.

Why the first line is everything

On every platform the opening line is doing one job: buying the next line. If it doesn't, nothing after it matters. Treat the hook as a separate draft, not the warm-up to your point.

The five that work

  • The contrarian take: say the thing everyone quietly disagrees with.
  • The specific number: concrete beats vague every time.
  • The open loop: promise a payoff you only deliver at the end.
  • The callout: name exactly who this is for.
  • The confession: a small admission earns outsized trust.

Write three hooks for every post and keep the one that makes you slightly nervous. The safe option almost never wins.
